A book that has been years in the making.

In 2009 I finished my first novel and soon got the message that it was not very good. After much frustration and two more unpublished novels I had a long talk with a publisher friend. She gave me excellent advice ... 'Write what you know!' she said.

A few weeks later I was going through some of my late mother's papers and I came across a bundle of old airmail envelopes. Inside were letters I had written from Cyprus during my National Service in 1957/58. As often happens when one discovers something interesting, I stopped what I was doing for more than an hour while I sat down and read many of them. The spelling and grammar were atrocious but that only served to remind me that they were usually written in great haste. I was transported back 65 years to the point that I could almost smell the goats and donkeys and feel the desert sun burning through the shirt on my back.

When I started writing again there was only one topic in my mind and I quickly understood the wisdom of that piece of advice. I knew that autobiographic narratives of army life were two a penny so I was immediately writing in the third person, but I had to find a voice to give to the young man who wasn't me.

That was when I met Harry Ledbetter. An aspiring journalist who had a lucky break and went for a scoop . . .
